What is a Font?

In computer terminology, a font is a reference list which assigns a number to the specific appearance and shape (glyph) of each different letter and symbol of an alphabet of any language. Fonts are used to display or print text. The keyboard driver uses the font to enable the user to write text. Therefore, to be able to write on a computer, both the font and the keyboard driver are essential. To find out more about the difference between font and software, please read the FAQs section.

Bangla Font – Standard/ Non-standard

Although Bangla usage in computers has been going on for several decades, there was no standard font for Bangla until recently. Bangla fonts were created by displacing ASCII Roman characters of English ANSI encoding. Font layouts varied according to each software/font designer, and could be used only with their package. Consequently, a Bangla document created in a particular font often cannot be viewed in another computer unless the second computer had the same font.

The Achiro keyboard uses such a non-standard font. Its advantage is this — you can use this font and keyboard in any program of any Windows operating system, because all operating systems and programs support ANSI encoding (i.e. encoding for English). Six BornoSoft fonts can be used for Achiro keyboard. These are: Ekush, Falgun, Sulekha Type, Deyalika, Shironam and Biggapon. All six fonts can be accessed after installing the keyboard package.

Unicode (UTF-8) is a standardized scheme for encoding text for the computer for Bangla and all other languages of the world. Until recently there was no Unicode font for Bangla (nor did any operating system support such a font). Quite recently a few open type Unicode Bangla fonts have been created, thanks to the voluntary efforts of Bangla-lover computer professionals. This package includes two such excellent fonts — Rupali and Solaimanlipi — with the permission of the volunteer creator of these fonts. Adhuna and Anoti keyboards use these two sets of fonts. Documents created in these fonts can be viewed in any other computer which has any Unicode-based open type Bangla font.
